Supervision

There is a considerable amount of information provided in Part 3: Approaches to Clinical Education >> Student Supervision in the Clinical Educator's Resource Kit regarding tips for the provision of supervision sessions to students while on clinical placement. In addition to these guidelines, the following supervision session outlines are provided to assist you in the preparation for supervision sessions in mental health settings. You will note that for each session, 2 different versions are provided: one to be given to the student prior to the session with tasks to prepare for and complete, and the second for the supervising occupational therapist, to provide aims and guidelines for conducting the session. (The contribution of Simone Bartholomai is acknowledged for the original template for the development of these outlines).

Consider encouraging the student/s to reflect on their performance in each of the areas of the SPEF prior to each supervision session, to encourage you to stay focussed on clinical placement objectives, and to identify any areas for further development - See Student Supervision - Self Evaluation Form

You may also like to refer to 'Stress management tips for students on clinical placement' (a powerpoint presentation kindly provided by Clinical Education staff at UQ) for strategies to incorporate in supervision sessions, to encourage students to have a variety of tools at their disposal for managing the extra challenges of clinical placement.
